Why Do I Have Back Pain?

Your spine is formed by a set-off of 24 bones stacked on top of each other with a soft disc between each segment to allow for flexibility. It supports our bodies and allows us to balance and move voluntarily. In a normal and healthy back, each joint in your spine should move freely and independently.

We rely on the spine continuously throughout the average day, even as we’re seated. Because the spine is an integral part of our movement, the rest of the body usually takes notice when it’s injured. It’s probably not a surprise that more than 16 million American adults suffer from some form of back pain every year.

While they’re certainly not the only reason for back pain, joint restriction, sprains, and strains are some of the most prevalent and can lead to significant and chronic back pain.

Joint restrictions

Joint restrictions can develop in a number of different ways.

In some situations, they are formed by the individual suffering from an accident or injury. In other cases, they develop from a repetitive strain or through poor posture. Being overweight, smoking, strenuous work, and emotional stress can increase the risk of you suffering from problems.

If a joint is restricted, swelling and inflammation often trigger muscular guarding, leading to more restriction. Since your spine works as a unit, and not as isolated pieces, a joint restriction in one area of your spine can harm other areas of your back or your back as a whole.

Sprains and strains

Most people will experience low back pain at some point in their lifetime, and 70% of those patients can attribute their symptoms to sprain and strain injuries.

Lumbar sprains and strains can often result from sudden or forceful movements like a fall, twist, lift, push, pull, direct blow, or quickly straightening up from a seated, crouched, or bent position. Most commonly, sprains and strains are not the result of any single event, but rather from repeated overloading.

The spine is very good at managing minor isolated stressors, but repetitive challenges often lead to injury in much the same way that constantly bending a piece of copper wire will cause it to break.

The most common causes of back pain include:

  • Herniated discs- when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the exterior casing
  • Fractures- broken bones
  • Sprains-  when the tough, durable ligaments that support bones have been damaged
  • Strains- refers to the partial tearing of the muscles or tendons that move your trunk
  • Bruising of tissue- injury to soft tissue
  • Pulled muscles- stretching or tearing of muscle
  • Compression of the spine- when a mass puts pressure on the spinal cord
  • Muscular imbalance from an old injury

Chronic back pain can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Sciatica
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Scoliosis
  • And, much more

While some causes of back pain are serious, often, the solutions offered at M3 can determine the cause and find a remedy that will last, alleviating pain for good.

It’s important to note that our team understands that not all back pain is due to spine damage or back-related injury. We always focus on a whole-body, comprehensive approach to finding pain and its supporting solutions.
